Although in England it’s not mandatory for children under the age of 11 to wear face masks; or as my 4 year old told me, “Kids don’t have to wear face masks!” I still think it’s a good idea to get a face mask for kids for a number of reasons.
Why get a Face Mask for Kids
1. It becomes less strange for them
First up, it makes it all feel a little less strange when your kids also have their own face mask. No, they don’t have to wear them. If however they own one they can try it on and see how it feels. It will then seem a lot less weird when seeing all the grown ups in shops wearing their face masks. It becomes a lot less intimidating for your children.
2. You may need one
Some airlines have made it mandatory for kids of a certain age to wear face masks so check your airline if you’re flying.
In Scotland the age for needing to wear a face mask is much younger. In fact it’s kids under the age of 5 that don’t need to wear a face mask in places In Scotland where face coverings are required.
If you need to take your kids to the doctors or to somewhere you feel more exposed to germs and viruses it might actually be a good idea to encourage your child to wear a face mask.
3. Because there are some amazing designs!
There are some fantastic designs out there for kids to choose from. Like the below chalkboard design mask from Treat Republic.

Let them Choose their own Face Mask
If you let your kids choose their own face mask it will give them a sense of ownership. It can be something for them to be excited about as there are so many amazing designs available.
Check out Treat Republic for a wide range of bright and colourful designs of face masks for kids. From unicorns and dinosaurs to mermaids and footballs and more!
Make sure the Face Mask is Comfortable
Comfort is key. You have to make sure your children have a mask that fits properly and feels comfortable. Otherwise they are not going to want to wear them!
The Face Masks from Treat Republic are great because they have a toggle you can fit meaning you can adjust the straps to make sure they fit perfectly.

Government Guidelines
Current guidelines from the Government with regards to kids wearing face masks state:
- Children under the age of 11 do not need to wear a face mask in settings where face coverings are required in England.
- Public Health England do not recommended face coverings for children under the age of 3 for health and safety reasons.
- Different rules exist in different parts of the UK so check here for your region: Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland.
The above was correct at time of publication but please check the government website for latest information on wearing face masks.
