“But why do I need to brush my teeth?” My four year old son asked me. Teaching kids the importance of oral hygiene is the starting block for good long term oral heath. That’s why I was delighted when I was asked to review Colgate Maximum Mild Mint Kids 3+.

Here are my 5 top tips to teach kids good oral hygiene:
1. Use a fun toothbrush
Choose a toothbrush that appeals to your little one. There are so many fabulous designs out there from favourite characters (we currently have a minion toothbrush) to animals, in lots of bright colourful designs.
If you can, let you little one choose their toothbrush when it’s time to replace their old one. This gives them a sense of ownership and control, which always helps when you’re telling them they need to do something!

2. Create a reward system
Whether it’s a star chart with a star sticker for each time your little one brushes their teeth, or a marble to add to the marble jar each day. Use whatever works for your kids.
An incentive to encourage good habits is a great way to create a regular routine.
3. Find a good toothpaste
Colgate Maximum Mild Mint Kids 3+ is clinically proven to fight tooth decay. It has a mild flavour that doesn’t taste overpowering but does make your little one’s breath smell fresh. The toothpaste directly targets and neutralises sugar acids in plaque before they can harm teeth. It also contains Fluoride and calcium to strengthen enamel and help prevent cavity formation.
The bright colours appeal to kids and it’s handy design means it stands up on the bathroom sink.

4. Watch videos on brushing teeth
Check out the kids YouTube app and find some toothbrushing videos. From the delightful Ryan of Ryan’s Toy Review sharing a toothbrushing story, to Blippi’s toothbrush song. There’s even an episode of Duggee where the squirrels earn their tooth brushing badge.
5. Sing a toothbrushing song
“Brush brush brush your teeth, brush them nice and clean…..Properly properly properly properly look at those teeth gleam!” sang very badly by myself to the tune of row row row your boat. This worked surprisingly well for my then three year old, who used to kick up a fight when it came to tooth brushing.
Make up a family song or pick one from YouTube that’s fun and encourages your little one to get those teeth clean!
