What is Coffee roasting?

Coffee roasting is basically when the raw coffee bean is brought to a high temperature and then very quickly cooled to stop the roasting, and as such the flavours, from being released from the bean. The temperature and length of roasting is what differentiates the coffee.

Roasting can give coffees unique tastes

Roasting can give your coffee unique tastes and the way it is roasted will result in different flavours and aromas. Below are the different types of coffee roasts and what you can expect from them.

The Light Roast

Light roast keeps the natural flavours of the bean. This roast has a more textured taste with a more pronounced acidity.

The Medium Roast

A medium roast still preserves the beans natural flavour. The acidity is reduced and the longer roast time also results in a deep caramel sweetness.

The Dark Roast

A dark roast has low acidity and is heavy bodied. The beans are dark in appearance and they do not retain the flavour of the bean as much as the medium or light roast.

What has the most caffeine, light or a dark roast?

Actually the way the bean is roasted doesn’t really affect the amount of caffeine in the roast. Dark roasts are used to make espressos so it is often thought these have more caffeiene but in fact it’s the brewing process that makes espresso’s strong. If anyhting the lighter bean is said to actually carry more caffeine.
