Why is travel important? Now more than ever in 2022 people are looking to travel. The last two years have been tough. We’ve been locked down and we’ve been restricted on where and when we can travel. But travel is the defining feature of many of our lives. People who travel are the world’s most active, influential, and happiest people. Travel is a force for good, a force for peace and relaxation, a force for health, and a force for economic growth. So what are the travel trends for 2022 and where are the must-stay places to travel this year?
What are the new travel trends for 2022?
1. The UK Staycation
All hail the UK Staycation! It’s how we holidayed as a family last year and it’s how we’re going to holiday in 2022 too! Although travellers are understandably looking further afield this year, we’ve also discovered how beautiful and how stress-free holidaying in the UK is. Then factor in all the amazing day trips you can do, from theme parks to National Trust. Britain’s history and culture means that people fly from around the world to holiday here…and we have it all on our doorstep!
There’s lots of ways to book too from camping and glamping, AirBnB, B&Bs and hotels. You can enjoy beautiful Britain and all that our country has to offer. For us as a family, we have two trips planned, both in our super cosy and comfy Camp-Let trailer tent. Our first trip is to Norfolk to enjoy the Norfolk Broads and go seal spotting on the beautiful beaches. And then we’re planning to board the ferry to head over to the Isle of Wight for a week in the school holidays, staying at Southland Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite.

Staying in the UK has lots of pluses for us. Whilst covid restrictions have eased I’m still not entirely comfortable going to a busy airport or sitting on a plane next to a stranger and wearing a mask for the duration. There’s no baggage limit and no currency fees to worry about. The weather’s not guaranteed but you can’t have everything! Saying that I can’t resist having sneaky peeks at last-minute deals. It’s the weather thing!!
To make the holiday in the UK extra special, why not do something incredible? There are some amazing experiences available. Fly in a Spitfire. Two seat Spitfire flights over the English Channel for example. How fantastic would that be!
2. Workation is a thing
With the rise of remote working and companies being much more flexible about working from home, the workation is now officially a thing travellers do. Why stay a week in that gorgeous and reasonably priced AirBNB apartment with excellent WiFi in the Mediterranean, when you could stay for three? Just make sure your employer is fully aware of your plans and is happy for you to work remotely in this way.
3. A magical Disney cruise
2021 was the year of the Disney mini-cruise but in 2022 you haven’t – pardon the pun – missed that boat. Disney is not operating mini-cruises this year from UK ports, but watch this space, word on the street is they may be back for 2023. In the meantime, Disney does have some memory-making once in a lifetime one week and fortnight cruises leaving from the UK or from other European ports if you’re happy to have a short-haul flight to board your cruise. No need to fly over to the USA or Caribbean for your magical Disney cruise experience.
A Disney cruise is on the top of my wishlist. I know my son would love it but not quite as much as me!
4. Wellbeing breaks
if anyone is not feeling tired and run down from the last couple of covid years then please tell me your secret?! Home-schooling whilst working full time has been a challenge. Plus it’s been quite some time since I’ve relaxed! I know I’m not alone and that is why the rise of the well-being holiday is predicted in 2022. Yoga on the beach, mediation classes by the ocean, deep breathing on the top of a mountain, vitamin seas, spa treatments, sleep clinics or unwinding in Hot Springs, who wouldn’t want to relax and recharge?
5. Hire a campervan and explore Iceland
Iceland is a popular destination for travellers because of its natural beauty. The country is located in the North Atlantic and has a population of about 376,000 people. It is bordered by Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Norway. One reason to visit Iceland would be to see the beautiful landscapes, which include mountains, volcanoes, geysers, glaciers and waterfalls. There are also many opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking and camping.

The Icelandic landscape is very diverse and there are many natural wonders to see. You can go on a long hike through the Icelandic highlands or take a boat tour to see the glaciers. There are plenty of opportunities for exploring and one of the best ways to do this is to hire a campervan in Iceland. A campervan will give you the freedom to discover the natural beauty and stunning landscapes that are left untouched by humans.
6. Go Skiing
A ski vacation is an excellent way to enjoy winter, stay active and get in shape. Skiing is a low-impact sport that is easy on the joints, so it’s a great choice for active people of any age. You can explore new places and experience new cultures. Plus ski vacations can be affordable if you plan ahead and book early. To keep costs down why don’t you look at Air BNB’s near the ski resort? You can book your flights serperately and get Ski Transfers to the ski resort.
7. Pet Passports
So, in the lockdowns we all got dogs; well actually we waited until after lockdown when it had been confirmed that hybrid remote and office working was a new company policy. Then we got a dog! But now how can we leave our beloved pooch when we go on holiday and have you seen the cost of doggy day care?!
It’s one of the reasons we love camping. Perfect for kids and dogs! There’s also plenty of dog-friendly holiday accommodation and hotels available. However what if you want to go abroad?

That’s where the pet passport comes in handy. You can get a Pet Passport if your pet’s vaccinations are up to date. Ferry’s over to France often allow dogs and some airlines even let you take your pet in the cabin with you. Rules vary depending on whether it’s an EU country or non-EU country. Find out more information on the Gov.UK website.
8. Take your tech
Technology is ever more essential when we travel as people realise the importance of being able to keep up to date with covid news and any potential health risks whilst on the move and at their travel destination.
It’s also really handy when it comes to booking day trips and restaurants to have decent WiFi. So despite the wise in conversation around screen-free holidays, actually having technology will ease any travel anxiety and help make your holidays as stress-free as possible.
If there isn’t WiFi at your accommodation consider buying a WiFi PayG mini to take with you. You activate with the sim in the device and connect to a mobile phone or tablet. It works well where there is phone signal and is perfect for when you’re travelling.

9. Last minute mini breaks
It’s been great working from home but it does mean that a change of scenery is often needed! So being spontaneous in 2022 is a must! If you find yourself at a loose end and feeling restless then take a mini-break.

I enjoyed a beautiful night away at the Richmond Hill Hotel last year exploring Richmond Park. The hotel was gorgeous, very art deco with beautiful rooms. The surrounding area was incredible to explore as well with the Thames on your doorstep, the famous Richmond Hill almost opposite and Richmond Park just around the corner.

Having a mini-break is a chance to treat yourself, have a change of scene and recharge your batteries!
10. Sustainable travel
Whilst travel in itself isn’t great for the environment, a travel trend for 2022 is sustainable holidays. Whether you take an electric road trip, travel by train through Europe, or sail the seas, there are more ways to take an eco-friendly holiday than ever in 2022.
11. Multigenerational holidays
If anything Covid has taught us is that life is short and precious and this will impact the travel trends for 2022. We need to love and value each other and what better way to do that than have a holiday with the Grandparents. Plus you might even get free child care for a night out too!

12. Visit Ireland
Ireland has a lot to offer for tourism. It is a country that is steeped in history and culture, with plenty of natural beauty and amazing landscapes. The people are friendly, the cities are vibrant and the food is delicious. It is also the home of Guinness and Jameson whiskey.
The Irish countryside is one of Ireland’s most beautiful features. It contains over 250 lakes and many rivers that flow into them. The landscape varies from lush green fields to rocky mountainsides with sheep grazing on them. There are also many forests throughout Ireland, which provide shelter to deer, foxes, badgers, otters and other wildlife.
Ireland has some of the world’s most picturesque beaches as well as some of its largest sand dunes at Malin Head in Donegal Bay on its northwest coast.
Ireland has been called “the Emerald Isle” because of its lush green landscapes. The Irish enjoy their countryside and take advantage of the many nature trails that are available throughout the country.
The Irish have a deep connection to their heritage, which can be seen in their art, music and literature. Ireland has produced some of the world’s most famous writers including Oscar Wilde, James Joyce and Samuel Beckett.
If you’d like to get away from the big cities, then explore the beautiful landscapes Ireland has to offer in places like Connemara. There are fantastic walks, lakes and even horseback riding trails you can access whilst staying at friendly places like Ben Lettery Hostel.
13. DIY Lapland Holidays
Have you dreamt about taking the kids to Lapland at Christmas but can’t afford the thousands of pounds these package trips cost? I hear you. But there’s a new trend emerging. It’s the year of DIY Lapland trips. Think AirBnB and book direct with owners. Also, book the many day trips on offer independently to save agency fees. It will still be a trip of a lifetime but on a smaller budget. What better way to end the year?
14. The Covid Test
A PCR Covid Test is important for travel especially if you want to keep others safe. Plus you need a Fit 2 Fly certificate. For more information about what is required visit GOV.UK or to book a PCR Test to get your Fit 2 Fly Certificate visit Klook.
