The Ultimate Guide to Trailer Tents: Everything You Need to Know

If you’re looking for a way to go camping and enjoy the great outdoors without sacrificing comfort, a trailer tent may be just what you need. Trailer Tents are a versatile camping option that offers a range of benefits, from easy setup and storage to a comfortable and convenient home away from home. Whether you’re a seasoned camper or new to outdoor adventure, this guide will help you get the most out of your trailer tent experience.

What is a trailer tent?

A trailer tent, also known as a folding camper or pop-up camper, is a type of recreational vehicle that combines the convenience of a trailer with the comfort of a tent. It typically consists of a trailer base with a collapsible tent structure that can be easily set up and taken down. I’ve been trailer-tenting since I was a kid. We had holidays across Europe in our Trailer Tents. The UK, France, Luxemburg, Switzerland and Spain. It’s a way you can independently travel with a comfortable and spacious living and sleeping space. As an adult I still go camping in a trailer tent with my husband, son and dog.

Trailer tents come in a variety of sizes and styles, from compact two-person models to larger family-sized units with multiple rooms and amenities.

Is a trailer tent better than a tent?

It really depends on your personal preferences and camping style. Trailer tents offer more comfort and convenience, with features like built-in beds and kitchens. However, they can be more expensive and require a vehicle to tow them. Traditional tents are more affordable and versatile but may not offer as much comfort or protection from the elements.

5 Reasons Why a Trailer Tent is the Perfect Camping Solution

Camping is a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with nature. However, traditional camping can be uncomfortable and inconvenient, especially for families with young children. That’s where trailer tents come in. These versatile camping solutions offer a range of benefits that make them the perfect choice for anyone looking to enjoy the great outdoors without sacrificing comfort or convenience. In this article, we’ll explore five reasons why a trailer tent is the ultimate camping solution. From their ease of use to their ability to cater to a variety of needs, you’ll discover why a trailer tent is an investment worth making for your next camping adventure. So, grab your camping gear and let’s dive into the world of trailer tents!

Reason #1: Affordability and cost-effectiveness

One of the primary advantages of a trailer tent is affordability. Trailer tents are relatively cheaper and more cost-effective than other camping options, such as motorhomes and caravans. They provide similar amenities and comfort without breaking the bank. Additionally, trailer tents are lighter and as such more fuel-efficient, making them an excellent option for budget-conscious campers who want to save money on petrol.

Moreover, trailer tents are an excellent investment for families who love camping and want to save money in the long run. They are durable and can last for several years with proper maintenance and care. In the long term, owning a trailer tent is more cost-effective than renting a camping tent every time you go camping.

Reason #2: Convenience and ease of use

Another significant advantage of trailer tents is their convenience and ease of use. Unlike traditional camping tents, trailer tents are easy to set up and pack up.

Trailer tents are also more comfortable to transport than traditional camping gear. They are lighter and more compact, making them easier to tow behind a car. Additionally, trailer tents have built-in storage compartments that make it easier to organise and pack camping gear, ensuring that you have everything you need for a comfortable camping experience.

Reason #3: Comfort and amenities

One of the most significant advantages of trailer tents is the level of comfort and amenities they provide. Unlike traditional camping tents, trailer tents come equipped with several amenities that make camping more comfortable and enjoyable. These amenities can include comfortable beds, built-in kitchens, and even toilets and showers.

Moreover, trailer tents provide a more stable and secure camping experience than traditional tents. They are designed to withstand harsh weather conditions, such as heavy rain and strong winds, ensuring that you remain dry and comfortable throughout your camping trip.

Reason #4: Versatility and flexibility

Trailer tents are incredibly versatile and flexible, making them an excellent option for a wide range of camping styles and preferences. They can cater to different camping needs, from family camping to solo camping and even glamping. Moreover, trailer tents can be customised to meet your specific requirements, allowing you to add or remove features as needed.

Trailer tents are also flexible in terms of camping locations. They can be set up in a wide range of camping sites, including remote areas that are inaccessible to bigger outfits. This flexibility allows you to explore more remote and secluded camping locations, ensuring that you have a unique and personalised camping experience.

Reason #5: Access to remote camping locations

One of the most significant advantages of trailer tents is their ability to access remote camping locations. Unlike caravans or big motorhomes, trailer tents are more compact and lightweight, making them easier to tow and navigate through narrow roads and tight spaces. This feature enables campers to access more remote and secluded camping locations that are not accessible by larger camping vehicles.

Remote camping locations offer a unique experience camping experience away from the crowds and noise of popular camping sites. Moreover, these locations provide a more authentic and intimate connection with nature, allowing campers to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the great outdoors.

Tips for choosing the right trailer tent for your needs

When choosing a trailer tent, it’s essential to consider your camping needs and preferences. Some trailer tents are designed for family camping, while others are ideal for solo camping or glamping. Additionally, you should consider the size, weight, and features of the trailer tent to ensure that it meets your specific requirements. For example, many models now have acrylic materials rather than canvas which has a wealth of benefits. Also, is having a shower and toilet important to you? Do you have a storage area for bikes or paddle boards? By doing your research and creating a priority list, you will be able to find the right trailer tent for your needs.

It’s also worth viewing the trailer tents so you can get an accurate understanding of what they look like and the space available. When viewing, ask for a demonstration of how to put up and how to take down so you can see how easy – or difficult! – it is.

Finally, make sure your car can legally tow the weight and loaded weight of your trailer tent.

Types of trailer tents.

There are several types of trailer tents available on the market, each with its own unique features and benefits. The most common types include pop-up trailers, hard-sided trailers, hybrid trailers and folding campers. Pop-up trailers are lightweight and easy to tow, while hard-sided trailers offer more protection from the elements. Hybrid trailers combine the best of both worlds with a hard-sided base and a pop-up tent top. It’s important to consider your camping needs and preferences when choosing the type of trailer tent that’s right for you. Here are some of the best trailer tents for your camping adventures:

Pros and Cons

This is a luxury trailer tent, and the price tag reflects this.

Is the Opus Camper worth the price, though?

If you have the budget for this folding camper, then yes, it is worth the price. They look so cool on campsites, and the air technology makes it so easy to put up at a touch of a button which, in my books, is a huge benefit in comparison to other trailer tents where it can take hours getting the trailer tent up and down. It’s worth noting though the OPUS doesn’t have a toilet or shower so you will have to depend on campsite facilities.

Camp-Let Trailer Tent

Are you looking to upgrade your camping game? Look no further than pop-up tent trailers! These compact camping solutions are perfect for those looking for a little extra comfort while enjoying the great outdoors. One brand that stands out in the pop-up tent trailer market is the Isabella Camp-let trailer tent. In my book, the camp-let trailer tents are the perfect introduction to the world of trailer tenting and the next step up from owning a tent.

We have a Campl-Let and have had some fantastic family holidays in it. With their lightweight and durable designs, Camp-let trailers offer a convenient and enjoyable camping experience. And the best part? The easy pop-up design means you can spend less time setting up camp and more time exploring. You can say goodbye to the hassle of traditional camping and hello to the fun and simplicity of a pop-up tent trailer in a camp-let.

  • Perfect for the whole family with the option for side annexes and two double beds.
  • A good secondhand market so you can buy on a smaller budget.

Pros and Cons

We love our Camp-Let. They are more like a tent than any of the other trailer tents, so you still have that fun camping feeling but with raised beds, you get extra comfort. There are no onboard amenities like a toilet or bathroom, but we placed a camper-loo in the side annexe, which works well for those nighttime wee breaks or if you have younger kids that can’t make it to the toilet block! For en-route storage, you can squeeze a few bits in the trailer tent itself, like camping furniture, blankets, etc, although space is limited. We use a roof rack and storage bag that goes on top of the trailer tent.

Do Trailer Tents Have Toilets?

Some trailer tents do have toilets, but not all of them. It depends on the specific model and features of the trailer tent. If having a toilet is important to you, make sure to research and choose a trailer tent that includes one. Our trailer tent didn’t have a toilet, so we bought a camping porta toilet and put it in the trailer side tent.

Fitting a Tow Bar.

If you’re in need of a tow bar to transport your trailer tent, you may be wondering where to turn. Luckily, there are several options available to you. You can visit a specialist retailer who sells and fits tow bars, or you can seek the assistance of a garage or mechanic who has experience with tow bar installation. Some car manufacturers also offer tow bar installation as an additional service. Whatever route you choose, be sure to do your research beforehand to find a reputable and reliable provider. A proper tow bar fitting will ensure a safe and comfortable ride as you embark on your next adventure with your beloved trailer tent in tow.

Towing a trailer tent.

So you’ve decided a trailer tent is for you. But is it difficult to tow a trailer tent? Towing a trailer tent can be a bit more challenging than towing a regular trailer, but it’s not impossible. You’ll need to make sure your vehicle is equipped to handle the weight and size of the trailer tent, and you’ll need to practice safe driving techniques, such as taking turns slowly and braking gradually. With a little bit of practice, towing a trailer tent can be a fun and rewarding experience.

Setting up and taking down trailer tents.

Setting up and taking down a trailer tent can seem daunting at first, but with practice, it becomes easier. Before you hit the road, make sure you have all the necessary equipment, including a level, wheel chocks, and a trailer hitch. When setting up, start by levelling the trailer and stabilising it with wheel chocks. Then, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to set up the tent and any additional features, such as awnings or annexes. When taking it down, make sure everything is dry and clean before packing it away. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions in reverse to collapse the tent and pack up the trailer. if it’s raining make sure you open it up to dry it out when you get home.

Maintenance and storage of a trailer tent.

Proper maintenance and storage of your trailer tent are crucial to ensure its longevity and functionality. After each trip, clean the tent and trailer thoroughly, checking for any damage or wear and tear. Make any necessary repairs before storing the trailer. When storing the trailer, make sure it is in a dry, secure location, such as a garage or storage unit. Cover the trailer with a breathable cover to protect it from the elements. It’s also important to regularly check the tires and brakes and to have them serviced as needed. By taking care of your trailer tent, you can enjoy many years of outdoor adventures.

Tips for a successful trailer tent camping trip.

Planning a successful trailer tent camping trip requires careful preparation and attention to detail. Before you hit the road, make sure you have all the necessary equipment and supplies, including a first aid kit, cooking utensils, and bedding. Research your destination and make sure you have booked a campsite so you don’t end up without a pitch for the night. When setting up camp, choose a level, dry spot and make sure to properly secure your tent and trailer. Check the weather and prepare for adverse conditions. There are some great ways to heat a tent to make sure you stay nice and warm in the night. With proper planning and preparation, you can have a memorable and enjoyable trailer tent camping trip.

Where to buy or rent a trailer tent

Before you buy a trailer tent, you do need to do your research. Additionally, you should read reviews and compare prices to ensure that you get the best value for your money. An excellent place to start your research is at one of the Caravan, Motorhome and Camping Shows at the NEC. These are in February and October and have lots of different makes and models to view in one place. In fact, it’s the ideal place to do your research and view new trailer tents.

Trailer tents are also available for purchase from several dealers in the UK, the main two being Camperlands and Camping International. Both of these dealers are helpful, and they are great places to visit if you want to view new and secondhand trailer tents. I have personal experience with both with regard to searching for a new trailer tent and accessories for the trailer tent and found them both to be informative, friendly and helpful. Be careful of fake dealerships as these do crop up, sometimes even replicating a respected dealership. The general rule is if the price looks too good, it probably is!

You may also want to consider joining Facebook Groups for the particular make of the trailer tent you are interested in. Often owners post their trailer tents for sale on these groups. You can also look on Facebook Marketplace and eBay. We bought our camp-let from eBay. However, please be careful as there are scammers on any social network or buying sites, and there’s always a risk with high ticket items.

Conclusion: Why a trailer tent is the perfect camping solution

In conclusion, trailer tents are the perfect camping solution for anyone looking to enjoy the great outdoors without sacrificing comfort and convenience. They offer several advantages over traditional camping tents, including affordability, convenience, comfort, versatility, flexibility, and access to remote camping locations. Whether you’re a family camper or a solo adventurer, a trailer tent is an excellent investment that will provide you with a unique and personalised camping experience that you’ll never forget.

  2. We have umm and arred about a trailer tent, we have the whole set up but with a pitch tent, and the thought of having one all packed away in a trailer is tempting, it is just about wear to store the trailer. Personally I would love a motor home but they are very much out of our price range!

  5. Trailer tents look so much more appealing than traditional camping tents. They are definitely something I need to look into next time I’m thinking about going camping.

  6. Thanks for the article. There is a problem with most trailer tents and, indeed, full caravans in making them toddler proof. For instance the ovens are often low and at a perfect height to burn an inquisitive youngster and dining tables are often a perfect height to knock a toddler’s head when they stumble. I’m just wondering does anyone know if there is a trailer tent or caravan that is toddler proof out of the box so to speak?

  7. We can’t drive, but once my husband gets a driving license, if that ever happens, then we will definitely consider a trailer tent. I do love how much storage do you get with a trailer tent compared to regular camping and I like how it is more affordable than a caravan.

  8. We were debating over getting one of these, then ended up getting a tourer which is a lot quicker to set up! but these do look really good.

  9. In the longer term these seem like great options. I’ve never camped because I’m keep on a bit of home comfort but I’d consider it if I could afford a trailer tent.

  10. As a family we’ve now done a few camping holidays and discovered it’s something we really like. It’d be lovely to have more comfort an amenities. Thanks for all the info.

  11. Loved our trailer tent when the children were small but we found putting it up and especially all the pegging out required took rather a long time……not good when you arrive on site and its pouring with rain. Oh how we envied the caravans, set up in minutes on wet days.

  12. We had a trailer tent when we were kids and they are alot more comfy than a standard tent with the beds being raised up and my Dad said they are easy to pull x

  13. Lots of helpful advice and things to think about. We’ve borrowed a trailer tent from my mother in law and it really is amazing and gives you so much more freedom to holiday, as well as bootspace in the car than traditional camping.

  14. Interesting article. Have never gone camping previously, but reading your article it seems a great way to holiday. Thanks for the information and advice.

  15. We spent a month camping round the UK in the summer (in a tent). When we came back we looked into getting a trailer tent as we saw so many amazing ones whilst we were away! In the end we ended up getting a caravan 😂 but a trailer tent is certainly something we will still consider!
