Living Arrows – 45/53 (2018)

We had a quiet weekend this week – well apart from the fireworks, they definitely weren’t quiet! I love this time of year though. There’s no opportunity to feel sad that Halloween has been and gone, as Bonfire night arrives, ‘remember, remember the 5th of November’. How could any of us forget with all the bangs going off around us!

As the 5th happens to be today, a Monday, and I work all day on Mondays, it’s difficult to pick up Sam and then get to a firework display. That’s why we enjoyed our fireworks on Friday night instead. We went to see the firework display at Mannings Heath Golf Club. My dad treated us to tickets and we got to watch the fireworks from the terrace whilst I enjoyed a cheeky cup of warming mulled wine and Sam picked the marshmallows out of his hot chocolate and proceeded to eat them whilst leaving the hot chocolate – all very civilised! The display was amazing too. Sam loved the fireworks and looked up at the sky in wonder. The look on his face was priceless and a very special moment. Fireworks, especially when you’re aged two and a half, are magical.

‘It’s like an aeroplane’! he exclaimed. And then, ‘That one’s the tooth fairy mummy’!  Hmmm not quite sure about that Sam but it is flying in the sky and sparkly so fair enough.

The bangs didn’t bother him at all. He also loved being out in the dark but he refused to wear his hat or put his hood up, typical stubborn two year old. It took a lot of convincing for him to finally submit to his woolly hat! There was a really awesome jazz band so we had a little dance to keep warm and one of the band members even let Sam have a go on his double bass – amazing!

In honour of the fabulous fireworks, my Living Arrows picture this week has me in it too. Sorry about that, I was using my son shamelessly as a lap warmer. As such I have no pictures of him at the fireworks on his own. The picture was taken just before the display and the smile on his face shows how much fun he was having, especially as his Grandparents were there too.

I love fireworks but of course as the owner of two cats they do worry me too. Lots of our neighbours had private fireworks and whilst Sam loved running excitedly from front door to back door to see them whilst shouting ‘frightening’ with a big grin on his face (so clearly not frightening at all), it does concern me when I think about the cats. Neither cat actually seem bothered by the fireworks at all so at least that’s something but I wouldn’t want them to be stuck outside with the loud bangs.

A top tip I heard today, apparently lavender oil works miracles on frightened canine friends to calm them, so put some on a cloth and let your dog smell the oil when the bangs are going off.

The rest of the weekend was spent picking up winter tyres for my car, wandering charity shops and eating lots of delicious food (and left over Halloween sweets – the diets starts soon honestly)!!

I hope you all had a good weekend too? Have you been to any firework displays? Look forward to reading all about it…
