Fratelli Pardi Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG
This wine is smooth and velvety with deep flavours coming through of black cherries, juicy prunes, cocoa and violet flowers. It is a bold wine with a profound taste of black fruits and spices. This leads to a velvety sensation in the mouth.
About the grape: Sagrantino is a historic grape, native to the region of Umbria in Italy. It was first recorded in 1598 but is thought to be much more ancient. This grape is supercharged with tannins
Winemaking
Grapes for this wine come from the Campolungo vineyard, which is planted on the slope of the hill right behind the winery. It has a south-east orientation. This is very important to help the Sagrantino grapes fully ripen and develop their signature deep flavour. The harvest is always done by hand in the middle of October. After pressing, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks for eight days, at a controlled temperature of 24-27°C. After that, the wine is carefully transferred into large, 2600-litre French and Slavonian oak barrels, where it matures for 18 months.
The use of large oak barrels for ageing helps to gently soften the tannins, but not overpower the natural aromas of the grape. Then, the wine is blended together and is left for another 9-12 months in a stainless steel tank to integrate. Finally, the wine is bottled. It is left to rest for as long as six to eight months in the cellar.
Tasting notes
When I poured I this wine into a glass I was impressed by its stunning deep ruby colour. It has a lovely aroma of violets, blackberry, black cherry and plum, with hints of cinnamon and cocoa coming through, as well as scents of cooked prunes and meat. The Montefalco Sagrantino is dry wine, with a full body and powerful tannins. It offers pronounced flavours of juicy prunes and spices, leading to a long velvety finish. It goes perfectly with an Italian meal, lamb, steak or cheeses.

Siddùra Maìa Vermentino di Gallura DOCG Superiore
This vermentino wine is so refreshing with concentrated flavours of lime, peach, honeysuckle and jasmine flower coming through. The Maìa offers concentrated flavours of refreshing citrus fruits and white flowers, all thanks to a special technique of winemaking. Made in Gallura, aka northern Sardinian Riviera, the area is famous for its white sandy beaches and shallow lagoons. Siddùra’s winery is hidden up in the mountains, just half an hour’s drive from the seaside resort of Portobello di Gallura.
Winemaking
Grapes are hand-harvested in the first ten days of September. Dino Dini, the winemaker at Siddùra, has a special way of adding vibrant character to his wine. He crushes the grapes and keeps the juice in contact with the skins for two days – much longer than usual – at a near-freezing temperature of 2°C. This is too cold for fermentation to start, but during that extended time the juice extracts lots of rich flavour from the skins. Dino ferments it for three weeks in stainless steel tanks, and after that ages it on the fine lees (again, in steel) for six months, where the wine becomes more complex and developed.
Tasting notes
This wine has a beautiful clear pale yellow colour. The pronounced aromas of lime, peach, melon and yellow apple, complemented by notes of honeysuckle and jasmine, make this a refreshing drink for sunny days.This Vermentino tastes dry and is bursting with zingy acidity. Maìa has high levels of alcohol and benefits from creamy texture and full body. Delicious with salad or fish or just enjoyed alone on a warm summer’s evening.
