Exploring Gratitude with Your Child

Parenting is often a balancing act. While you want to spoil your child and give them the best in life, it’s also important to instil gratitude and an understanding of hard work. We can also show it in a more private way as an act of reflection and mindfulness to ground ourselves. There are many benefits to doing so for children as it can help them to feel loved, and appreciated. It can help develop your child’s confidence and build stronger relationships with those around them. Benefits that all coincide with higher academic achievement. Meditation

There are so many little things that we have to be grateful for. If your child isn’t sure where to start, talk to them about the clothes that we wear, the food that we eat and the shelter over our heads. Other than their parents, there’s no one really that they can thank, and meditation can be a nice way to reflect on these things. They can help children to see life in a more positive light. Meditation can be grounding for the body and mind, no matter your age, young or old.

A Gratitude Jar

Similarly, your child can encapsulate their gratitude in a jar by writing what they feel grateful for down on slips of paper. They’ll serve as a visual reminder of how fortunate they are and ground them.

Thank You Notes

Handwritten notes have a special touch. Time and thought are put into them. Writing a short thank you note is a lovely way to show someone that you care and appreciate them. It’s something that you can do at the end of the school year to say a big thank you to their teachers. Reflecting on the help that they’ve received is not only a nice thing to do but it can help them to value and appreciate school and build a better relationship with it.

Giving Back

There are so many things that we have to be grateful for which we don’t even realise whilst there are less fortunate out there. What we have no use for can be donated and help someone else in need. It’s a thoughtful thing to do and a small act of kindness that can make a real impact elsewhere. Toys and children’s clothes are prime examples as they grow out of them so quickly. By donating these, you can teach your child that it’s better to give than it is to receive and help them to be more appreciative of the things that they have.
