Summer in Cyprus brings up memories of lazy days, outdoor swimming pools, sandy beaches, cocktails at sunset and family fun at the water parks. But Cyprus isn’t just the perfect holiday destination for summer. With it’s warm winter climate, Cyprus is the perfect all year round destination for family holidays. And as a regular traveller to Cyprus I’ve put together my top tips for family holidays in Cyprus in Winter.
Top Tips for family holidays in Cyprus in Winter
1. Pack for both cold and sun!
Cyprus is lovely in the winter. Mild and warm weather means you can sunbathe by the pool during the day. However, despite the warm days it can get very cold at night. So my top tip would be to make sure the whole family have plenty of warm clothes for the evenings and nights.
Look for accommodation that has either a wood-burner that you can snuggle around in the evenings or central heating. Or at the very least has plenty of blankets available to share!
2. Get up early to enjoy the daylight
Like in the UK it does get darker earlier in Cyprus. However as the island is 2 hours ahead of BST it’s not a problem to get up early to enjoy most of the daylight and then have earlier nights.
3. Sunbathe on the beach AND go skiing in the mountains
One of my favourite times of year to go to Cyprus is in February. Cyprus is located in the Mediterranean Sea and it’s southernly position means that the weather is normally nice enough to enjoy sunny days at the beach. However, if you head to the mountains you can also go skiing!
Where else in the world can you sunbathe one day and swim, in an admittedly cold but bearable sea, and then the next day drive a couple of hours to get to a ski resort thick with snow? Although the snow isn’t always guaranteed it is very likely in January and February.

4. Check if the pool is heated

If you want to be able to swim in a pool then check that the pool at your hotel or accommodation is heated. In February swimming pools can be very cold and many outdoor pools aren’t heated at that time of year. If you’re not bothered by the pool, the sea is generally warmer and although still chilly I have been in the sea in February before.
5. Enjoy cultural and historical sites
When I’ve visited Cyprus in August I’ve struggled to do much other than swim in a warm swimming pool and find the nearest place to eat with air conditioning! The outside temperatures are so hot you don’t feel like doing much. If you visit in February when the temperatures are cooler you can enjoy visiting some of the incredible cultural and historical sites that Cyprus is famed for. These include World Heritage Sites such at Tomb of the Kings. The cooler temperatures will mean you can explore the tombs at ease which can often be very uncomfortable to do when the temperatures are so high in the summer months!

6. Plan for rainy days
Although February in Cyprus is often sunny with warm temperatures it’s worth having some activities planned for rainy days in case you get unlucky. Whether that’s a shopping trip to one of the very impressive malls, such as Kings Avenue Mall in Paphos, or a visit to a museum, monastery or art gallery. Cyprus also has cinemas and ten pin bowling alleys. There are also plenty of lovely spas in Cyprus so perhaps a good opportunity for the mum of the family to treat herself!
Why have a Cyprus family holiday in the winter?
Cyprus is a wonderful destination no matter the weather! In fact I preferred my holiday in February to my holiday in August. It’s perfect for half term and you might even be able to fit in some skiing as well as enjoy some winter sun!
