Planning a Holiday in Orlando? Don’t Miss My Essential Tips

Twenty years ago, I stepped off a plane into the warm Florida air, hand in hand with my then-boyfriend, now husband, and embarked on my first-ever Orlando adventure. We were young, excited to explore the “theme park capital of the world,” and completely unprepared for just how much this trip would capture our hearts. Fast forward to 2020, and we planned to relive that magic by introducing our son to the wonders of Orlando. Unfortunately, COVID-19 had other plans, cancelling our dream holiday. The disappointment was crushing, but as the world has slowly returned to normal, I’m thrilled to say we’ve finally rebooked that Orlando holiday. It’s now 2025, and we’re heading back with our now 9-year-old son, and I couldn’t be more excited to experience everything from magical theme parks to sun-soaked adventures through his eyes.

Planning a holiday in Orlando can feel overwhelming with so much to think about, but I’m here to share my top tips. These are based on extensive research, advice from regular UK visitors to Orlando, and my own experience of booking this trip. Whether it’s your first visit or you’re heading back, these tips will help you make the most of an unforgettable getaway in the Sunshine State.

Why Orlando Is the Ultimate Family Holiday Destination

Orlando is so much more than the home of world-famous theme parks. Known as the theme park capital of the world, it offers something for everyone—from thrilling rides and fascinating attractions to natural beauty and delicious cuisine.

The main draw of an Orlando vacation is, of course, its iconic theme parks, including Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort. Here, you’ll find magical kingdoms, immersive lands like the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and the highly anticipated Universal Epic Universe, recently opened to the public. Beyond the theme parks, Orlando is full of hidden gems like Disney Springs and downtown Orlando, where you can enjoy live entertainment, live music, shopping, and mouthwatering restaurants.

Planning your holiday to Orlando is about finding the balance between the big attractions and quieter moments. With Florida’s year-round sunshine, water parks, and outdoor adventures, it’s a destination that keeps the whole family entertained.

Preparing for Your Holiday in Orlando

Booking with Confidence

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned when planning a holiday in Orlando is to ensure all arrangements are financially protected. When our original 2020 trip was cancelled, we had to claim back costs through our travel insurance, which ended up being a lengthy process due to the pandemic. This experience taught us the importance of having good travel insurance with comprehensive cover. Make sure to check exactly what your policy includes before booking, as it can save you a lot of stress later on.

Thankfully, our pre-booked park tickets were fully refunded, and these came through very quickly. When booking tickets, it’s worth looking for flexible options to ensure you’re protected if plans change. The small fee for this is worth it for peace of mind.

For added peace of mind, we also booked our trip through a package holiday provider covered by the ATOL scheme. Having an ATOL certificate meant our trip was safeguarded if things went wrong. This year, we did the same, through British Airways, ensuring we had flexible booking conditions and financial security. Always choose providers with ATOL protection and a solid reputation, and consider spreading costs with a deposit if available.

Choosing the Best Deals

If you’re looking for value, keep an eye out for package deals, especially those that include theme park tickets and accommodation. Some packages offer exclusive theme park benefits, such as early entry or transportation shuttles, which can save you time and money. Check with your travel agent or explore options through airlines like British Airways or Virgin Atlantic.

Flexibility is Key

Something else I’ve learned is the importance of flexibility. Our original trip was derailed by a global pandemic, and while that’s (hopefully) a rare occurrence, even small hiccups can impact a trip. Today, travel providers are much more accommodating when it comes to rescheduling or amending plans. When making an existing booking, confirm the cancellation and amendment policies. You never know when you’ll need to adjust dates or details.

Visas and ESTAs: Planning Ahead to Avoid Disappointment

When planning a trip to countries that require visas or an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) – such as the United States – it’s crucial to sort this out well in advance. The application process for visas and ESTAs can take awhile to be approved, and any errors or omissions in your application could lead to delays or even a denial of entry. To ensure a smooth journey, start your application process early, allowing plenty of time before your intended departure date.

Carefully check the details required for an ESTA application if you’re visiting a country under the Visa Waiver Program. Mistakes on your form can potentially derail your travel plans. Therefore, double-check all information you provide against your passport and travel documents to avoid any discrepancies. Planning ahead will help ensure that administrative hurdles don’t stand in the way of your adventure.

Exploring Accommodation Options: Hotels, Villas, and More

When it comes to accommodation, Orlando offers a wide range of options to suit every traveller’s needs. For those looking to stay close to the theme parks, there are plenty of hotels and resorts available in areas like Lake Buena Vista and International Drive. Both Disney and Universal also have their own resort hotels which come with resort perks such as early entrance.

For travellers seeking a more luxurious experience, there are also villas and vacation rentals available, providing spacious living areas and amenities like private pools. These options can be perfect for families or larger groups travelling together. Please note, there’s often an additional charge to heat the swimming pools which can add significantly to the cost of your villa. Make sure you check this before you book if a swimming pool is important to you.

On the other hand, budget-conscious travellers can find affordable accommodations in areas outside of the main tourist hubs. This may require a bit more planning and research, but it can save you some money in the long run.

When booking your flights and accommodation, be sure to consider factors such as location, amenities, and reviews from previous guests. With so many options available, it’s important to find the perfect balance between comfort and budget. Another tip is to take advantage of package deals offered by travel websites or through travel agents. These can often include discounted rates on flights and accommodations, as well as added perks like theme park tickets or meal plans.

For those looking for a unique experience, there are also options for camping near the theme parks. This can be a fun and budget-friendly way to stay close to all the action while still being immersed in nature.

No matter what type of accommodation you choose, make sure to prioritise your wants and needs and budget. After all, a comfortable and convenient place to stay is crucial for making the most out of your holiday. With a little bit of planning and research, you can find the perfect balance between comfort and budget for your next trip to the most magical places on earth.

Budgeting for Your Trip to Orlando

Planning a trip to Orlando can be exciting, but it’s important to stick to a budget so you can enjoy your holiday stress-free.   Here are some tips to help you budget for your trip:

1. Set a realistic budget:

Before booking anything, determine how much money you have available to spend on your trip. Be honest with yourself and set a realistic budget that you can stick to.

2. Prioritise accommodation:

Accommodation will likely be one of the biggest expenses during your trip. Decide what is most important to you – being close to the theme parks, having a pool, or having amenities like a kitchen – and look for options that fit within your budget.

3. Plan your meals:

Eating out every meal can quickly add up, so it’s important to plan ahead. Look for accommodation options that have kitchen facilities so you can cook some meals at home. You can also pack snacks and drinks to bring with you to the theme parks instead of buying them there.

4. Take advantage of discounts and deals:

There are often discounts and deals available for popular attractions such as Disney World or Universal Studios. A lot of attraction ticket operators have Black Friday deals so be on the lookout for these offers.

5. Be flexible with travel dates if you can:

By being flexible with your travel dates, you may be able to save money on flights and accommodations. Consider travelling during the off-season when prices are lower and attractions are less crowded. I know it can be difficult if you have school age children due to unfair school fines but use inset days wisely!

6. Don’t forget to budget for tips:

Tips aren’t just  for restaurants, but also for attractions and services like taxis or tour guides. It’s always a good idea to budget for tips as they are often expected in the tourism industry forming part of the salary.

7. Take advantage of free activities:

Not everything has to cost money on your trip. Research and find out about free activities or events happening in the area you’re visiting. This could be anything from a local festival, a hike in a national park, or a museum with free admission days. It’s a great way to experience the culture and save some money at the same time. Visit Orlando has some great ideas on free activities and also a list of 29 things to do for $29 dollars or less is perfect for families on a budget, including activities like indoor go karting (perfect for a rainy day), the Orlando Eye, a scenic boat tour at Winter Park and themed mini-golf.

9. Bring reusable:

Remember water at the parks are free so bring your reusable cups!

My Top Tip: One of the best ways to keep costs down is to look for accommodations that offer extra perks for guests. We booked the Drury Plaza Hotel Orlando Disney Springs area, which is conveniently located close to Walt Disney World, as it provides fantastic kickbacks, such as a free buffet breakfast, a free early evening light buffet that includes three complimentary alcoholic drinks during the evening kick back meal. These inclusions mean a lot of our meals are already covered, making the trip much more affordable overall.

Additionally, we plan on using rideshare options instead of renting a car. With a little planning, Orlando can be both magical and budget-friendly!

Planning Your Days in Orlando

I’ve already mentioned Visit Orlando and this was our first point of call when researching our holiday.  This website is a fantastic resource for planning your days in Orlando and finding the best deals on attractions and tickets. The Interactive Map helps to visualise where everything is and is a great planning tool for families.

Another source of information for me has been the Facebook Groups. These have been so helpful and you can post your questions and normally someone answers immediately. I’ve joined Orlando Tips for Brits and Orlando Florida Disney & Universal Planning 2025/2026. You can also join Groups for your hotel which is so helpful if you need to research transport form hotel, grocery ordering, restaurants in walking distance, etc. Often current guests post pass along items like pushchairs they specifically bought for the trip to leave out here, bottle water, sun lotion and lilos. Great for saving money and reducing waste!

Remember, it’s very likely going to be hot, you’re going to be tired, so my top tip is please don’t try and do too much. In my experience you can’t do everything in one trip without experiencing overwhelm and exhaustion. We’ve planned plenty of rest days where we’re going to relax by the pool, maybe head to International Drive for a round of mini golf, and enjoy a couple of cocktails!

Theme Parks and Beyond

The heart of any Orlando vacation lies in its exceptional theme parks. For us, the centerpiece is Walt Disney World Resort, where each park offers unique charms. This year, we’ll revisit fan favourites like Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and Animal Kingdom. But our son is very excited for Universal Studios, especially the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Seeing him experience these worlds for the first time will definitely be a highlight.

Universal Studios water ride

If your trip coincides with peak times like summer or holidays, purchase your theme park tickets early as they can sell out during peak periods. Prioritise the must-see attractions and try to visit popular parks on weekdays for smaller crowds.

Making Time for Water Parks

Florida’s heat can be intense, especially during the warmer months. That’s where water parks come in. Splashing around at Typhoon Lagoon or Volcano Bay is the perfect way to escape the sunshine and cool off as a family. This summer Disney will have both Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach Open. Another popular water park is Aquatica.

What to See Beyond the Parks

Orlando is brimming with attractions beyond the parks. A visit to the Kennedy Space Center, just over an hour away, offers an awe-inspiring look at NASA’s space program. Strolling around Disney Springs or downtown Orlando provides opportunities to enjoy great dining, shopping, and live music.

If relaxation’s on your agenda, Orlando’s lakes and gardens offer serene beauty. And for food-lovers, trying the local cuisine adds flavour to the experience. Orlando’s food scene offers something for everyone, with everything from classic American comfort food to international flavours.

Time It Right for the Best Experience

Plan your visit during off-peak times for a more relaxed atmosphere and easier navigation. Summer, Easter, and Christmas are high seasons, so expect larger crowds during these periods. That’s when it’s best to take it at a slow pace and prepare for long queues. If you need to travel during these times, book accommodations and tickets well in advance to secure availability and you might want to consider buying fast passes or Lightening Lanes.

My Top Tips for Planning an Orlando Holiday

1. Set a Solid Budget

Orlando offers a range of pricing options, but costs can add up quickly once you consider theme park tickets, lodging, dining, and extras. Establish your budget early and look for package deals that include multiple expenses.

2. Pack Strategically

The Florida heat can be a shock if you’re not used to it. Light clothing, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, hats, and refillable water bottles are essential for long days in the theme parks. Consider items such as spray fans, cooling towels and chafing shorts.

3. Reserve Dining in Advance

Many restaurants inside Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort require advanced reservations, especially for character dining experiences.

4. Take Breaks

Orlando holidays can be non-stop, so don’t feel pressured to do everything in one day. Pace yourselves and schedule downtime at your hotel’s pool or one of the area’s water parks.

5. Consider Travel Insurance

While ATOL protection safeguards your package trip, travel insurance can cover unexpected issues like medical emergencies or halts to plans due to weather.

6. Download Park Apps

Apps for Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and others are invaluable. Use them to plan your days, check wait times, and make reservations for attractions or dining.

7. Keep the Kids Engaged

For little ones, bring activities or toys for flights, downtime and long queues. And don’t forget snacks for the day; busy park schedules can sometimes delay meals.

8. Apply early for ESTA and Visas

If you’re traveling from outside the US, make sure to apply for your ESTA or visa well in advance. This will ensure that you have all the necessary documents and approvals before your trip.

9. Stay Hydrated

Florida’s hot and humid climate can be exhausting, so make sure to stay hydrated throughout the day. Bring refillable water bottles and take advantage of drinking fountains located throughout the parks.

10. Wear Comfortable Shoes

With so much walking involved, it’s important to wear comfortable shoes that can withstand long hours on your feet. Consider investing in a good pair of sneakers or supportive sandals.

The Magic of Orlando Awaits

For my family, Orlando represents nostalgia, excitement, and the joy of discovery. Planning this trip reminded me how special these experiences are, and I can’t wait to see it all through our son’s eyes. Whether it’s your first time or a long-awaited return, I hope these tips help you create wonderful memories on your dream holiday.

Orlando truly offers something for the whole family, from thrilling rides to awe-inspiring sights. With thoughtful planning and a little flexibility, your Orlando adventure is sure to be unforgettable. Now all that’s left is counting down the days until we’re back in the sunshine state, soaking up every magical moment.
