How to support your daughter’s growth through sport

Getting your daughter involved in sports is a powerful way to build confidence, strengthen her health, and encourage positive lifelong habits. Yes, barriers do still exist, especially around outdated gender norms, but there is still plenty that parents can do to offer encouragement and support. Here’s some practical advice on how to help your daughter thrive in the world of sports.

The mental and physical upsides of sport for girls

Participating in sport boosts both physical and mental wellbeing. Girls who are active in team or individual sports develop higher self-esteem and a stronger sense of belonging. Regular activity also supports academic performance and long-term health. Regularly communicating with your daughter about these positives, and making the links between her sports activity and the benefits that she is seeing, will boost her motivation to stay involved.

Break gender norms in sport

Young girls are surrounded by subtle messages that certain sports aren’t for them. Myths about the impact of sports on women, or women’s ability to take on certain sports, still abound even with evidence to the contrary. Make it a point in your household to challenge these stereotypes early on and demonstrate inclusive attitudes. Encourage your daughter to try out any physical activity that she shows an interest in – be it football, rugby, or skateboarding.

Give her the tools and resources to succeed

Access is everything. Help your daughter research and find local clubs and also the best coaching sessions. Most importantly, equip her with the right gear so that she feels like she belongs. Participating in sports should be fun as well – let her express her commitment and passion through what she wears. This could be her favourite team’s football shirt, or a certain style of sports shoe.

Active parental support makes all the difference

Aside from equipment and encouragement, parents must also be actively involved in their daughter’s sports activities. Whether it’s attending her matches, kicking a ball around in the park on the weekend, or celebrating her progress and milestones, your involvement matters. Kids are more likely to commit to a sport if they see that their parents take a real interest. Be her biggest cheerleader and she’ll remember it for life.

Raising strong, active daughters

With your support, your daughter can gain so much from being part of a sport. From stronger friendships to lifelong confidence, helping her get involved is one of the most empowering things you can do.
