How to stay organised in a small home office

Productivity has been linked with an organised space. Many people are unable to work with full efficiency in a cluttered and messy environment. Then factor in that we are now working from home much more! It’s the new norm – and all the more reason for home offices to be organised and in order. However, it can be difficult to keep your office organised, especially if the area you have is small and offers limited space to work around. I previously wrote about how to set up a small office, now I’m sharing some tips and organisational hacks to help keep your small home office in order.

Add more shelving

A clever way to maximise a small space is by adding shelves. They keep the ground area free and give you plenty of room to keep all your bits and pieces. You can also opt for cabinets and bookcases from Emma Mason or similar places to occupy the free wall and use the area wisely. It can be the perfect space to keep your books, frames, and office accessories. A pro-tip is to add baskets in the lower shelves to keep all the messy stuff hidden and in one place.

Making use of floor to wall shelves

If you have a free wall in your home office, you can use it to have floor-to-wall shelving unit. It will give you enough space to add all the items to the shelves. You can opt for an organised aesthetic system that works perfectly for your home office. Add a pot of plant and some photo frames to give it a more personalised and thoughtful look and to keep you inspired.

Remember: to avoid accidents these units should be secured into the wall.

Add office desks

Office desking is the most important way to organise the office and keep it nice and tidy. Adding an office desk will give you a dedicated working area as well as space to keep all your files and paper in one place. You can also keep the surface clutter-free by adding holders for your pens and pencils.

Make good use of paper holders and file holders

A home office is a place where there’s lots of papers and documents scattered about. It’s easy for a small space like this to look cluttered and messy. For many people, this can impact their productivity as well. Adding file holders will be of great help in keeping the documents in one place and will keep the table surface clutter-free.

Clear up the message board

Many home offices have a message board to keep up to date with the latest updates and upcoming plans. If your message board is cluttered, it’s high time you clear it to truly optimise its usage. Organisation requires decluttering, and an organised message board will keep you more productive and up to date. Clear away all the old messages and pictures from your kids from the board. Organise it, so it has all the latest notes and information about your current work-related thing to keep you on track and focused.

Use paperweight for papers in use

While file holders and cabinets are conventional for keeping paper neatly tucked away, there’s a need for an accessory to deal with papers in use. A solid paperweight is an accessory that can come in handy in such situations. It will hold them in place, prevent important documents from flying away if you have a window open and will look nice too!

Declutter you small home office

It’s important in a small office to keep on top of paper work. Have a regular/weekly or monthly declutter. Get the shredder out and sort into piles: keep and file, shred, recycle, bin.

Organising isn’t as hard a task as you might build up in your mind. The main hack with organising is to keep going back after some time and reorganise to keep everything in order and the space clutter-free.
