Hoover Upright 300 Review from a Mum

I have a six year old boy, I have a senior cat and I also have a 10 month old puppy. To say I need the best vacuum cleaner for my home is an understatement. That’s why I was delighted to review the Hoover Upright 300, Pets and Long Reach. In my home, we can really put this new vacuum cleaner to the test!

The Hoover upright 300 corded vacuum cleaner (also known as the HU300 and hoover h-upright) comes from hoover direct in great packaging which is easy to unbox and with clear instructions in the user manual. Truth be told, it was very easy to work out but it was nice to have the instructions manual there if needed. It surprised me just how quick it was to unbox, set up and get hoovering!

The Challenge: Kid, Cat and Dog

Muddy paws, sticky fingers, shredding fur and crumbs. These are just some of the mess you can expect from having a kid, a cat and a dog! The Hoover Upright 300 was really put through it’s paces. Below are the challenges it faced:

The Contents of the Box

The Box Contains:

  • Extra Tools Light & Steerable Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleaner.
  • Pets Turbo Brush.
  • 3in1 Crevice/Dusting/Furniture Nozzle.
  • Long Crevice Tool.
  • Additional 2.5m Stretch Hose

The Hoover Upright 300 for Allergy sufferers

The first thing that I love about this Hoover, is that it’s great for anyone who suffers from allergies. Every Spring my eyes start running, I start sneezing, my throat is sore and I’ve even experienced swelling in my face before. The worst bit is, as the warmer months continue, my hay fever doesn’t seem to shift. I live on the edge of town with fields and the forest on my doorstep, which is lovely, but it also means as soon as I open a window, pollen blows into my home. As such I need a hoover that is really effective with dealing with allergens.

That’s where the Allergy Care H13 HEPA Care comes in. It’s a washable filter that traps allergens and also helps to purify the air in the home.

What allergens can Allergy Care H13 HEPA Filter pick up in your home?

You can find all kind of nasties in your home, including dust mites, pet hairs and dander (dry skin), and pollen. These allergens can really affect your health and wellbeing. It can also be a nightmare for any allergy sufferers who visit home. One of my good friends is allergic to cats and digs so not ideal as I have one of each!

A normal vacuum cleaner with decent suction power will be able to pick these up and empty into a litre bin. However, the particles can be re-released back into the home and as such allergy sufferers are still exposed to the allergens. What the washable h13 hepa filter does is trap fine particles, which are so small you can’t actually even see them, so that they don’t get released back into the air or in the bin. The HEPA filter traps these particles so they are removed from your home, meaning when you empty your bin you are not unintentionally releasing them back into the air. This in my humble opinion is a must for any pet owners or anyone who suffers from hay fever.

The Hoover Upright 300 for Stubborn Pet Hairs

What I love about the pets version of the Hoover 300 is the pet brush that comes with it. The bristles on the pet brush lift cat or dog hairs and allergens from soft furnishings and carpeted stairs. Pet hair is the bane of my life with both a cat and a dog who both seem to shred their hair endlessly, particularly in the Spring.

I normally find it really hard to remove pet hairs but the specialist brush blew me away. It’s powerful and affective. Take a look at my before and after pictures of the dog hairs on the cushion in my living room (as well as the muddy paw prints). It shows what an amazing job the brush bar does on the Hoover Upright 300. The extra long reach of the stretch hose (2.5 metres) was also really helpful and easy to use. It’s a brilliant pets vacuum cleaner for the home.

Advanced Multi-Cyclonic Technology in the new Upright 300

The sustained air performance on the Hoover Upright 300 uses multi-cyclonic technology for improved dust separation. It works by pushing dust away from the filter which helps keep the filters stay cleaner for longer. As such there’s no loss of suction (based on tests measured according to EN 60312-1 clauses 5.7 and 5.9). The multi-cyclonic dust separation technology definitely gets a thumbs up from me.

Extra Long Reach

As mentioned previously this model has a 2.5m stretch hose. As well as this there is also a long crevice tool for an impressive 13.5m reach. The cord length is 8.1m cord.

Lightweight Hoover

For a corded vacuum cleaner I was amazed at how lightweight the hoover h-upright was! At just under 5kg, there’s actually not that much difference in weight to some stick vacuum cleaners. The total weight of 4.94kg makes this easy to manoeuvre around the home.

The 80° Steering Angle

The foot of the Upright 300 has been cleverly engineered with a flexible joint to make it easy to manoeuvre. Thanks to the 80° steering angle I found the hoover so easy to use. I was whizzing round the rooms in no time at all. The swivelling floor nozzle glides like a dream!

Put to the test: Skirting Boards and Floor Cleaning

I’ve already mentioned how great the hoover h-upright is with regards to dealing with allergens and pet hairs, but how does it perform, especially compared to my previous vacuum?

First up the floor. I love that the hoover upright 300 had a hard flooring setting and a carpet setting, making it efficient on both surfaces and ideal for different floor types. All you have to do is switch the brush bar on when on carpets, and slide the vent cover to vary the suction if required. Then when back on hard floors or on deep pile rugs, turn the brush bar off for maximum suction.

Take a look at the before and after photos below of the entrance between my conservatory and kitchen to see how it does clean hard floors.

The steering is so agile you can get right up to the skirting boards and thanks to the design it doesn’t mark them. The dusting brush attachment is ideal for the skirting boards themselves. I even used it on my bay window ledge to get it clean.

Maintenance: Dust Bin and Filters

It’s really easy to empty the dust bin and you can do this after ever use. All you need to do is press the dust bin release button and lift it out of the cleaner. Hold the dust bin over your rubbish bin and then just press the dust bin empty button.

Hoover recommends that you clean the filters regularly to ensure the cleaner is working efficiently. The pre-motor filter ad the exhaust filter cna both be cleaned by removing excess debris and then using lukewarm water. Instructions are included in the manual.

Wiper Blade

The optional wiper blade can be slotted onto the floor nozzle. It is by no means necessary for normal cleaning but will improve the energy efficiency of the hoover. It’s worth noting however it will make the hoover more difficult to push and manoeuvre.

Where to buy the Hoover Upright 300?

The Hoover Upright 300 is a great price on Hoover Direct’s website. Currently reduced to £149 you can order directly from hoover limited UK.

Final thoughts, should you buy the Hoover Upright 300?

If you have a busy home with family members and guests coming in and out, if you have pets or if you have allergies, then yes, in my opinion, the Hoover Upright 300 is an excellent option for your home. It passed all my challenges and came up trumps. It’s affordable and efficient, and although it is loud when in use, it does the job and it does the job well. That’s what any busy parent needs so what’s not to love.

If you don’t have pets you don’t have to buy the pets model. The standard model also gets excellent reviews. However, the pets mini turbo brush was definitely a plus for me.

  2. I need one of these – but which brand and model to go for? Each friend I ask think their cordless vac is the best and no other will do! It’s all rather confusing, which is why I’m still no nearer making a purchase. I’m just endlessly looking!

  3. I love a decent vacuum cleaner, we have 2 dogs with different furs and also a child which is like a tornado so we vacuum a lot!
