5 reasons to go on a family hike

There are so many reasons to go on a family hike and it can be really rewarding and fun. Hiking is a great way to spend time with your family. It’s also a great way to explore the natural world, build a sense of camaraderie, and create memories that will last for years. The best part is that it doesn’t have to be expensive or difficult!

Hikes don’t have to be too long or difficult either. Find kid-friendly hikes that are suitable for everyone including young children. If you have older kids you can look at more challenging hikes. I always remember the time I hiked Snowdon when I was 15 with my mum, dad and brother. It was an amazing hike with incredible views and a memory that will last a lifetime!

So here are the reasons to go on a family hike:

1- Hiking together helps keep the whole family fit and healthy

Hiking is more than just a leisure activity. It can be a great way to get in shape and stay healthy. And the best part? You don’t need to spend hours on the treadmill to see results. You are outside in a natural setting, breathing in the fresh air. The benefits of hiking are endless and it is not surprising that it has become one of the most popular outdoor activities in recent years.

There are so many health benefits to hiking; it builds stamina and improves muscle strength. It can help you maintain or lose weight, lower blood pressure, and improve physical health and fitness levels. Hiking is a great form of exercise for kids as well because it can be challenging, but still fun at the same time. It can improve the physical health of your whole family, whilst giving your children the opportunity to explore nature and learn about where they live. Regular family hikes together will help your child have an active lifestyle which hopefully they will maintain into adulthood.

2- A Family Hike is good for everyone’s mental health

Is there anything more invigorating than fresh air, green space and the natural environment? It’s no wonder that recent reports have shown that hiking is good for your mental health. When you go hiking, you are exposed to new sights and sounds. This helps you stay focused on the present moment and gives you a chance to reflect on your life. Hiking also provides an opportunity to get out of your comfort zone and try something new. This can be therapeutic because it gives you a sense of accomplishment and control over your life.

Hiking is a good way to promote mental health in children too. It can help them:

– Reduce anxiety and stress

– Improve self-esteem

– Develop self-awareness

– Build confidence

– Increase mindfulness and concentration

– Gives them a sense of accomplishment

Family hiking and walking can have a real positive effect on children. It will give them the opportunity to learn about different environments and discover a whole new world. It will also give them a sense of adventure.

3- National Parks and countryside walks are free

The national parks are preserved for public use, so you can enjoy the scenery and wildlife in nature. The national parks have trails of various lengths and difficulty levels, so there is something for everyone, even young kids. With plenty of kid-friendly trails; there are even pushchair-friendly walks and wheelchair friendly walks so it’s a lovely inclusive way to enjoy the outdoors.

Some of my best family hikes have been at National Parks and I’m lucky to live so close to the South Downs National Park. If you’re not sure where to go hiking though, use a walking route planner to get some ideas. You can enter your location and find some wonderful hikes and walks near you.

4- A family hike will bring you closer together

Walking is the best way to spend quality time together away from other distractions. It’s a screen-free physical activity with no social media to distract anyone, and a great opportunity to talk openly and freely, or just have fun together!

If your child is initially reluctant to walk, why not create a scavenger hunt along the way? If their new to hiking and not keen to do longer hikes, you can start off gently with maybe walks around the local park. They will soon be wanting to take on longer distances and asking when the next hike will be!

5- Hiking can make you all smarter

We have all heard of the benefits of exercise on our brains. But what about hiking and does it help make you smarter?

It has been found that hiking can make you smarter, happier, and more creative. It has a lot of benefits for your brain, such as improving memory, focus, and decision-making skills. There really are so many good things about hiking!

Hiking Essential

Don’t forget the essentials. I always take water bottles, snacks and a first aid kit, especially if you’re going on a long walk or hike. Additionally, items like an ACE flashlight, a map, a multi-tool, and extra layers of clothing can greatly enhance your safety and comfort on the trail.
